Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last to arrive, typically between ages 17 and 21, and often the most problematic. Because modern mouths rarely have enough room for these late-arriving molars, they frequently become impacted — causing pain, crowding, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth. At 3V Dental, we provide wisdom teeth evaluation and removal at our Port Washington and Massapequa offices.

Your Visit
A panoramic X-ray shows us the position of all four wisdom teeth and any concerns with adjacent structures.
We discuss whether extraction is recommended, what the procedure involves, and what to expect for recovery.
Under local anesthesia (and nitrous oxide if desired), the wisdom tooth is gently removed.
You'll receive detailed aftercare instructions. Most patients feel comfortable returning to normal activities within a few days.
Signs and symptoms of incoming wisdom teeth include: tenderness, soreness, or swelling in the very back of the mouth; sudden onset of tooth crowding or shifting; swollen or inflamed gum tissue over the emerging tooth; or a partially erupted tooth that traps food and bacteria.
More serious complications of impacted wisdom teeth include cyst formation, damage to adjacent second molars, infection (pericoronitis), and displacement of properly aligned teeth.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed — but they should all be monitored. According to the American Dental Association, healthy wisdom teeth that come through correctly and can be kept clean don’t necessarily need extraction.
However, wisdom teeth that are impacted, partially erupted, causing crowding or pain, or presenting with signs of decay or infection should be evaluated for removal. Most dentists recommend extraction before symptoms become severe, as younger patients heal faster and complications are fewer.
