Laser decay detection uses a small handheld diode laser to scan the surfaces of your teeth. Healthy tooth material does not fluoresce under the special light — but decayed material shows up clearly. The laser wand emits a safe beam of light that passes along the tooth surface. As it scans, healthy enamel reflects the light normally while areas beginning to decay glow with a detectable fluorescence, registering a numerical score that indicates the severity of early breakdown.
This early detection makes it very easy to catch small problems long before they need a filling — in many cases, a remineralization protocol or dietary changes can reverse early decay entirely when caught at this stage.
Earlier detection catches decay at the tooth surface that might normally be hidden even in an X-ray. Studies show laser tools do a particularly good job picking up early fissure decay in molar grooves.
